When you are pregnant with your first child, a completely new world opens up for you. A fun, but also exciting world in which you have to make many choices regarding the purchase of all kinds of products. This also applies to the purchase of baby clothes. The temptation to go all out during your pregnancy is huge, because everything is so cute! But what do you really need, what do you have to take into account and how do you know what the right size is? You will find the answers to the above questions in this guide.

What size baby clothes should you buy?

It is important to keep in mind that your little baby grows very fast in the first year of life. Although the midwife can make an estimate, the weight and height remain a surprise. Therefore, do not buy too many clothes in advance. Ask around with family and friends who also have children, so baby clothes get a second life and don't end up in the garbage can.

On average, most babies are size 50 at birth. If your baby was smaller or born prematurely, it is best to choose a size 48 or smaller. If your baby is heavier than eight pounds, choose size 56. Was your baby born and is he or she slightly smaller or larger than expected? With rental services such as Gray Label or Red Orka, you can still have clothes at home quickly. When your mini has outgrown the clothing, simply return it. Babies generally change clothes size every two months. Here you will find a handy size chart.

What do you really need?

First things first: preferably buy clothing made from natural materials, such as cotton or wool. There are a number of reasons for this: for example, the temperature regulation of natural fabrics is better, natural fabrics are more sustainable and more reusable. Your baby will also come

not come into contact with potentially toxic chemicals used in synthetic fabrics. In addition, avoid clothing with zippers, buttons, bows or hoods: comfort is key. Above all, you want your baby to feel comfortable. The overview below is a nice basis with which you can move forward in the first few months.

6 rompers per size
Onesies ensure that the diaper stays neatly in place. Choose wrapover rompers, especially in the first months, because you don't have to put them over the baby's head.

8 sets of clothes per size
This can be eight sweaters and pants, but also, for example, four dresses and four salopettes with matching tights. Always keep in mind the season when your baby is born. Tip: sweaters and t-shirts often get dirty faster than pants. A few extra sweaters are always handy.

3 hats
After birth, a baby cannot properly regulate its temperature. A hat prevents heat loss through the head and keeps your baby nice and warm.

6 pairs of socks
Socks also help your baby retain body heat. Most babies are size 10-12 at birth. The sizes of baby socks are often indicated with a month indication.

6 pajamas or playsuits per size
Baby rompers are super comfortable and also practical. They keep your baby warm, stay in place and are easy to put on and take off.

Two cardigans and/or jacket
Finally, cardigans and/or a jacket are indispensable in your baby's wardrobe. Depending on the season in which your baby is born, you can choose to purchase a jacket.

A second life

Has your baby outgrown his clothes? Then save them for the next child, pass them on to family or friends, the thrift store or sell them online. “Think, for example, of online platforms such as Marktplaats, Vinted or a Facebook group”.
