What is an isofix car seat?

difference Isofix and i-Size

Isofix and i-Size are often confused, but they are two different things. Isofix is the attachment system: the way you click the car seat or base into your car. i-Size (standard R129) is the safety standard the car seat meets.

i-Size car seats are classified by your child's height instead of weight, keep your child rear-facing for longer (safer for the neck), and are tested for side-impact collisions. All i-Size car seats use Isofix for attachment. Conversely, not every Isofix car seat is automatically i-Size certified, although almost all modern car seats now meet the i-Size standard.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AN ISOFIX CAR SEAT?

  • Safer than seat belts : direct connection distributes impact better in the event of a collision.
  • Prevents installation errors - Up to 70% of car seats are installed incorrectly with belts, this risk is much smaller with Isofix
  • The seat cannot come loose, but this can be caused by incorrect use of the car seat belt.

HOW DO I INSTALL AN ISOFIX CAR SEAT CORRECTLY?

First, locate the Isofix attachment points between the backrest and seat of your back seat: these are usually marked with plastic caps or symbols. Slide the Isofix arms of the car seat fully into the attachment points until you hear a clear 'click'.

Check that both sides are securely fastened by gently pulling on the seat. For seats with a support leg, place it firmly on the car floor and adjust the height according to the instructions. Many modern Isofix seats have indicators that turn green when everything is installed correctly – use these as an additional check. Always test the stability by moving the seat in different directions; it should move no more than 2-3 centimetres.

Does every Isofix car seat fit in every car?

Not every Isofix car seat fits in every car. There are two types: universal and semi-universal seats. A universal seat fits in almost any car with Isofix. A semi-universal seat is only approved for certain car models, which you can find in the seat's type list or on the manufacturer's website. Always check this before making your choice.

In addition to the two Isofix hooks, a universal Isofix seat often has a third attachment point: the top tether. This is an extra strap at the top of the seat, which you secure to an attachment point in the car. The top tether prevents the seat from tilting forward in a frontal collision. Some seats use a support leg that rests on the car floor instead of a top tether, with the same purpose: extra stability.
